The ruling came in North Carolina, which 2014 changed its restrictive voting law after the U.S. Justice Department accused it of targeting African Americans with nearly impossible-to-translate voter ID laws that disproportionately affected minority voters.
The court's majority found voting rights protections were invalid because Section 5 - which has been on the books since 1960s and was originally meant to combat discrimination in voting – had not been adequately updated since 1988.

"The core purposes of the Voting Rights Act have been served, and discriminatory impact has been curtailed, by means that will continue to minimize the risk that a jurisdiction with no discriminatory intent will be required to take effective and reasonable steps to remedy the effects of preclearance, under Section 5," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote.
